Things to See & Do Around Kirkcudbright
Kirkcudbright is a bustling little town set on a sheltered position on the River Dee. It has a busy harbour and marina area, a good selection of family run shops, galleries, pubs and hotels, restaurants and carry-outs. A good guide to the events happening in the town is held on the Kirkcudbright Artists' Town Website, and the site of the Summer Festivities carries their summer-long events list.

Art and Artists
Positioned on the northern shore of the Solway Firth, Kirkcudbright is famous for its soft light and great sunsets. As an established artists' town we have a selection of galleries and craftshops displaying the works of mostly local artists and makers. During July and August 2005 the town will host an important exhibition from the collection of the Kelvingrove Gallery in Glasgow. Visit Monet and the Impressionists for more information.

Outdoor Pursuits

Kirkcudbright has its own 18 hole golf course with spectacular views over the town and the estuary beyond and where visitors are made very welcome. There are over 30 other golf courses in Dumfries and Galloway to choose from. We also have tennis courts, a bowling green and a squash court which all welcome visitors.

Fishing
Along the coast there is a selection of small sandy bays with safe bathing which are very popular with dingy sailors. Sea fishing is popular at several points along the shore where access is permitted. Trout fishing permits for two local lochs are available for visitors from our Angling Association and it Barmagachan Trout Fishery.

Cycling and Walking
The National Cycle Route 7 passes through Kirkcudbright and there are many quiet roads around kirkcudbright for cyclists and walkers to explore. The 7stanes off road cycling routes through the Galloway Forests offer quiet routes in the woods through to enough excitement for the most adventurous of off-road enthusiasts.

Natural History
Red Kite
Red Kites were recently re-introduced to our area and facilities have been made for us to see these beautiful and rare birds. The Galloway Red Kite Trail website has full information. Our coastal countryside is home to a wide variety of bird and animal life as is extremely well illustrated in the website of Keith Kirk's Natural History Website which we thoroughly recommend you to visit and enjoy. The site has great views of the area too.

Leisurely Pursuits
If all you are just looking for is a quiet place to pass a few days then Kirkcudbright makes an ideal base for you too. As well as Kirkcudbright's shops and galleries to explore the nearby Food Town of Castle Douglas has a good selection of high quality outlets offering local produce. Just as close is Gatehouse-of-Fleet, a quiet village with many nooks and crannies to explore. Or you might like to call at the David Couthard F1 Museum and Diner at Twynholm or at the Cream o' Galloway for a complete family day out.
